Blinded by a blow to his head when his ship is torpedoed by Germans, Phillip, who had always looked down upon black-skinned people, now suddenly finds himself ship-wrecked with Timothy, a huge, extraordinary, old, black sailor. Phillip learns to understand the dignified, wise and kind man whom he came to depend upon in his struggle for survival.
