Five in a Row is an extremely easy approach to unit studies. If you are new to home schooling and desire to use a unit study approach to teaching, this is one program that will not overwhelm you. "Five in a Row is unit study program for K and up -- easy to use, flexible, a gentle approach to learning. Each week, a book is read and topics relating to history, language arts, geography, art, science, and applied math are discussed. My kids retain much of the information, and eagerly awaits their "Five in a Row" time each day. "Five in a row is a pleasure to teach! It is truly amazing how much information even young ones retain. My 4 1/2 year old boy cried when I told him we were on school break. He couldn't understand why we weren't going to have another book to read and study. He now looks for the copyright date, tries to understand why the author wrote something, looks for the type of media artists use in art, and he sees and much, much more thanks to FIAR (short for Five in a Row), as we call it. Also, there is a GREAT support board with helpful and enthusiatic moms who teach with this method, http://www.fiveinarow.com. You can also "wing" it the morning of.... or prepare more in depth study. I have done both successfully. It works best (for us) with a little advanced planning for the week -- about 30 minutes to an hour total. I heartily recommend this program!
