Easy Writing
This text, written by author of Easy Grammar, teaches students to write more complex sentences. In doing so, the book integrates grammar extensively. East Writing constitutes a useful adjunct to writing programs such as Writing Strands or Wordsmith; it is not a complete writing/composition curriculum by itself.
Within this single volume are two levels, both of which cover basically the same material, albeit at different levels of sophistication. The book cover states that Level 1 is for lower and upper elementary, while Level 2 is for upper elementary, junior high, high school, basic skills. It should be noted, however, that even the easier Level 1 teaches concepts such as past participle and subordinate clause.
Other aspects of the text include the following:
The presented material does not seem to be highly dependent on what was covered previously in the text. Rather, the chapters seem to be arranged so that they could be covered, if necessary, out of order, or even skipped without undue hindrance to learning material in subsequent units.
The book is in a worktext format.
There is generally ample opportunity given to practice new concepts.
Permission for reproduction for student use is given.
There are some students for whom a certain degree of sophistication in writing sentences appears to come naturally. In those cases, this book would probably be superfluous. Nevertheless, although one of my children appears to fall into that category, this text still made a useful addition to our writing curricula. For a simple example, I noticed, relatively early into the book, a change in my children’s written sentences: They were starting to use semi-colons for the first time and they were using them appropriately.
