Homeschoolers' Comments
"One of the most touching aspects of Dr. Carson's story is his mother. Although she couldn't read and she worked three jobs (she wouldn't take welfare) she was determined that her two sons would grow up successfully. To that end she required that they go to the library after school and write two book reports per week. She would 'read' these reports to herself and affirm her sons’ efforts (her other son became a mechanical engineer). They didn't know she couldn't read. Dr. Carson states that it was at the library where a world beyond the ghetto was opened to him. She also paid careful attention to the manners and customs of the people whose homes she cleaned and she taught her sons how to speak, dress and interact in socially acceptable ways. She taught, and they learned well. I think that if there is anyone more amazing than Dr. Carson it is his mother!" I REALLY love this book!

Gifted Hands
Ben Carson, M.D. works medical miracles. Today, he's one of the most celebrated neurosurgeons in the world. In this book, he tells of his inspiring odyssey from childhood in inner-city Detroit, where the fifth-grade children nicknamed him 'Dummy', to his position as director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital at the age of 33. Dr. Carson is a role model for anyone, especially black youth, who attempt the seemingly impossible as he takes you into the operating room where he has saved countless lives and pioneered procedures that are used around the world. This is another book which kept me up all night reading! |
