A Wrinkle in Time
On a dark and stormy night, Meg Murry and her family are visited by a stranger who surprises them by announcing that "there is such a thing as a tesseract." Two years earlier, Meg's father had disappeared while conducting experiments with a tesseract, a method of traveling through the fifth dimension. Now Meg, her brother Charles Wallace, and their friend Calvin must journey across time and space to find Meg's father. Though they are aided by three mysterious women, they must rely on their own skills--and in Meg's case, her faults--to rescue Mr. Murry from the forces of evil. 1963 Newbery Medal winner.

Farmer Boy
While Laura Ingalls grows up in a little house on the western prairie, Almanzo Wilder is living on a big farm in New York State. Almanzo and his brother and sisters work at their chores from dawn to supper most days-no matter what the weather. There is still time for fun, though, especially with the horses, which Almanzo loves more than anything. From shearing sheep and milking cows to training young calves, Almanzo Wilder worked very hard on his family's farm in New York. But when his chores were all done, Almanzo could go to his favorite place in the whole world -- the Horse-Barn. Although his father wouldn't let him handle the frisky colts, Almanzo could still look at them and dream of one day having a horse all his own!

The Minstrel In The Tower
Roger and Alice live alone with their mother in a tiny cottage. Their father, a knight, left five years earlier to fight in the Crusades and never returned. When Roger's and Alice's mother falls dangerously ill, she sends them on a quest to find an uncle they never knew they had. They take with them their mother's lute. "Show him the eagle carved on the back," she tells them. "Ask him to come quickly. Quickly!" Things become complicated when they are captured by outlaws, and their lute--the only proof of their identity--is stolen. Knowing that at least one of them must escape for their mother's sake, they come up with a plan. Alice, the better climber of the two, climbs up the tower to a high window and squeezes out through it. Now she must journey alone, find her uncle, and persuade him to help without the lute to prove her identity. With courage and cunning, she must convince her uncle, save her brother, and ultimately her mother.

The Stone Fox
"Ten year old Willy lives in Jackson, Wyoming on a potato farm with his grandfather and his dog Searchlight. When his grandfather falls ill and the tax collector comes calling for back taxes, Willy is determined to find the money to save the farm. But where can a 10 year old boy earn $500? He sees an advertisement for the National Dogsled Race, held each year in Jackson and decides to enter. He is convinced that he and Searchlight can beat the other racers, among them, an American Indian, Stone Fox. Stone Fox has a team of five Samoyeds and has never lost a race. He races to earn prize money so that he can buy back land taken from his people. John Reynolds Gardiner has written a beautiful story of faith and courage with strong, exciting scenes that move the story along at a fast pace. With its powerful, emotional ending, youngsters begin to understand that not every story has a happy ending and you have to learn to accept the good with the bad. Stone Fox is a story of two heroes, trying to win the race for good causes and in the end, they were both winners. A must read for children age 9-12 and the perfect read-aloud family book."
