Books - Oscar Otter and Henry & Mudge
Oscar Otter is tired of other animals getting in his way when he plays, so he decides to build his own slide. He ignores some important advice from his father and when he decides to explore, he gets lost and attracts the attention of a fox, a wolf, a mountain lion, and even a curious moose. Thankfully, he finds his slide in time to escape narrowly from the other animals sliding after him. This short, funny story will have children laughing as they learn the importance of following their parent's advice.
Henry and Mudge, everyone's favorite boy and dog duo, enjoy three adventures in this book. In Snow Glory, Henry finds a flower that he loves and must learn to give it up when Mudge steps in in a surprising way. In Puddle Trouble, Henry and Mudge venture outside into the rain without permission. Finding a huge puddle, temptation becomes too much and they jump in! What happens when Henry's father arrives at the puddle? In The Kittens, the cat next door has five kittens. Mudge is fascinated and treats them gently. When a new dog enters the neighborhood, can Mudge get there in time to protect them? |

The Drinking Gourd
When Deacon Fuller sends his misbehaving boy, Tommy, home early from church, Tommy accidentally discovers a family of runaway slaves hidden in his barn. Big Jeff and his family have escaped and are fleeing to Canada where they can be free. Tommy learns that his father has hidden them and is part of the Underground Railroad, a group dedicated to helping runaway slaves to freedom.
Tommy helps his father hide Big Jeff, Vinnie, Little Jeff, and baby Pearl in the hay wagon and take them to the river, following the route of the drinking gourd, a constellation in the northern sky pointing the way to freedom. While his father goes for the boat, a slave search party approaches and Tommy must think quickly to save them. He tells the men, who recognize him from church, that he is running away because he is afraid of being punished. The men laugh and ride away without searching the wagon.
Later that evening, when Big Jeff and his family had been sent on their way toward freedom, Tommy and his father discuss obeying the law and the true value of a man. |

Keep The Lights Burning, Abbie
For hundreds of years, lighthouses have warned ships and sailors of danger. Today llighthouses have electricity, radios, and radar to help them. Many years ago, however, dedicated lighthouse keepers used whale oil and petroleum for their lamps, and would often be cut off from other people for up to several months. It was their job to keep the lamps lit, to warn the ships at sea of dangerous rocks. Matinicus Rock is off the coast of Maine, on the east coast of the United States.
This is the true story of Abbie Burgess and her family. In the winter of 1856, Abbie's father, the lighthouse keeper, must go for badly-needed supplies, medicine, and oil. As he leaves, he asks for Abbie's promise to keep the lights burning. She gives her word and watches him row away, not knowing that a storm will soon isolate the lighthouse for four weeks. She learns what a promise means as she tends the lights nightly, cares for her sick mother, her sister, and her chickens, and watches anxiously for the storm to end.
